Evangelism Commission

In the early part of 2007 the current convener of the commission had to step down from her leadership role on the commission due to personal obligations.  David Luckett recruited a new convener and several meetings were held to discuss the organizational structure and major components of this commission.

During the transition of leadership, with the departure of David Luckett as the Interim Dean and welcoming the new dean, Edward O’Connor in September, the Evangelism Commission continued to actively welcome newcomers and parishioners on Sundays, promote name tags and signing the guest book through the organization of the Connectors, deliver bread to visitors immediately after church Sunday afternoons, and maintaining a cohesive group of ushers.

The Evangelism Commission held its first meeting with the new convener and Dean Edward O’Connor and Bryan Owen on September 24, 2007.  There was some reorganization made to the membership of the Commission to include John Anderson, Ouida Drinkwater, Robert Langford, David Allen, Frank Farmer, Cheryl Kirchner, Dottie Donaldson, Emily Merrill, Susan McNease, Diana O’Toole, Anne Hooker, Ross Hooper, and Lesly Lloyd.

At this meeting, the commission reviewed its membership, mission, and responsibilities of the committees and coordinators for the Bread Ministry, Connectors, Ushers and Newcomers Class.

The members of the commission determined the need to have a training session for the Connectors and Ushers after identifying several issues regarding specific functions of each of these groups in welcoming newcomers and visitors.

On November 11, after the 11:00 a.m. service a training workshop was held for the Ushers and Connectors facilitated by Bryan Owen and Lesly Lloyd.  The workshop was well attended, lunch was served, the mission of the church was iterated and emphasized by the Dean Edward O’Connor, and the groups reviewed their functions and responsibilities and then identified the things that are working well and ways to make improvements in welcoming visitors.  This was a great way to reactivate the groups and renew their commitment to the ministry of Evangelism.  There was a lot of positive energy and support from the participants and they were commended for their efforts and commitment to serve on this commission.

The next step was identified to establish new, revised guidelines and functions for the Ushers and Connectors and to schedule meetings on a regular basis of the Evangelism Commission.
