Music
Music at St. Andrew's Cathedral is intended to meet the varied needs of a large and highly diverse congregation. The musical resources of the parish are focused primarily on music offered in the liturgy. Dr. John Paul, Choirmaster and Organist, ext. 136; Rob Robertson, Assistant Organist; and Shawn Leopard, Children's Choir Director, 368-9585; make up the music staff of St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral.
The Cathedral Choir
A community of some forty choristers dedicated to music of the Anglican Tradition, including study of recent music styles and resources relevant to our liturgy. Consisting of trained musicians and dedicated non-professionals, the Cathedral Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Wednesday evenings and sings at the 11:00 service on Sunday mornings. Although some ability to read music and a reasonable singing voice are helpful, they are not essential. New choristers are welcomed at all levels of proficiency for study, development, and incorporation into the group.
The Children's Choir
This choir is made up of children from St. Andrew's Parish and also children from throughout the city of Jackson who are between the ages of 7 and 14, as basic word reading skills are essential.
The choir rehearses Wednesday of each week from 6pm-7pm. The choir will sing at selected festivals and liturgies at the Cathedral, being joined by altos, tenors, and basses from the Cathedral choirs on occasion. In addition to the techniques of singing, the children study music theory and other basic music skills. They are exposed to a variety of sacred choral music but focus especially on the music that has been central to worship in the Episcopal Church. The choir is affiliated with the international program of the Royal School of Church Music (R.S.C.M.), and is directed by Shawn Leopard.
The Parish Choir
This is a community that leads the music in worship at the 8:45 a.m. Sunday service. The mission and vocation of this choir is to study all phases, traditional and experimental, of Anglican music so as to remain flexible to the evolving worship needs of the congregation which it serves. The group welcomes members with no musical training, as well as those with some choral experience, and rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 6:00-7:15 p.m.
